Defining Vision & Mission Industry: Energy; Challenge: Performance & CultureChallenges & Objectives The objective was to increase the effectiveness of a well-established corporate research laboratory and help build a revised charter that would motivate the entire community and establish a more positive vision of the future. The initiative was stimulated by new leadership. The Work we did Our involvement was to facilitate a process designed to explore the culture, motivation and effectiveness of the research centre. Over a period of six months Kiron designed, with the clients, and facilitated a process for improvement. This included three 5-day large group meetings to: 1) clarify and articulate strengths, weaknesses and opportunities, 2) identify and plan some strategic, technical and culture improvement projects and 3) develop some creative solutions aligned with these projects. Kiron provided guidance, coaching and support during the six months using analogies, metaphors and learnings from history; in addition they used non-traditional techniques such as creative group problem solving, film review and educational surveys. Results We created and developed a variety of initiatives and began implementation of several straightforward and effective projects and processes for lab identity, creative idea/concept development, job objectives and science fairs. Some other initiatives included ones for customer interaction, project staffing, improved internal and external communication, organization structure clarifications, peer reviews and work assessment plus teamwork and career development.
